Primarily foaming agents are used in injection molding applications to change aesthetics, reduce sink marks, and to reduce the density. Another common application for foaming agents, also called blowing agents, is sheet extrusion. A result of density reduction is that less plastic is required per part which in turn also means less winds up in solid waste. Foamed parts have the added benefit of improved insulating and acoustical properties as well. At the heart of the mechanism is an additive that releases typically inert gas at normal plastic processing temperatures. With accurate additive selection, cell size, density reduction, and property change can be dialed in.
